Give me a Gift

Author: Kamal Acharyya | Posted on: 20th, Nov, 2023

Received so many gifts
all throughout my life,
maybe on birthdays
anniversaries or otherwise;
all of those were material things
bought by my friends and wellwishers
wrapped in colourful papers
and given with love and blessings!

Now I don’t find much use
of those types of material gifts,`
as most of these lie unused
in some corner of the house;
instead I long for a gift
which you don’t get in shops or malls,
which only you have
and can give it to me if you so wish!

Give me a gift…
of your enjoyable company
once in a while,
beyond the virtual world of
facebook, whatsapp or mobile,
to share the joy and sorrow
of these lonely days
sitting side by side for a while!

Give me a gift …
of some of your leisure time
if not physically, at least on mobile,
just to say hello, how are you, Kamal?
let not your call log on my phone
show only outgoing calls
revealing my eagerness to talk
and getting connected to world outside!

Give me a gift …
of your inner humanity
coupled with love and affection,
compassion and understanding,
sympathy and empathy;
as in these twilight years
I crave for a gift of one of such type –
a gift which money cannot buy!
