Express Yourself

Author: Kamal Acharyya | Posted on: 19th, Oct, 2025

Once i saw an ad of Airtel long time back, when the company was
in its nascent stage introducing in the internet; the ad had
two catchy words:“Express Yourself”,
i got stuck with that small expression and pondered over the
philosophy of life’s intention!

What is our life all about? is it really expressing one self –
in whatever way, form or place? all the creations on the earth –
natural objects and formations, flora and fauna, reptiles, insects,
fishes, animals, birds, human beings …. all are trying to manifest
themselves in different shapes, sizes, colours, sounds,
varied actions and expressions!

Hill with its majestic height, innumerable waterfalls, rivulets,
dancing down the slopes, river with constant flow to surrender
to the ocean, desert with its ever-changing sand dunes and
beautiful colours of sunrise and twilights, wind whispering
in the forest of saal and segun, swaying the golden crop in
the paddy field, cloud in different shapes and sizes floating
in the clear blue sky to meet the distant hill, droplets of
rain slashing incessantly in a pool!

A variety of trees in different sizes and foliage, giving shade
and life-saving oxygen 24×7; pretty flowers in so many colours
and shapes blooming all through the year with beauty and grace;
like a cuckoo singing, hiding behind the leaves,
or the peacock dancing, welcoming the rains; like a mosquito
piercing us through its stings, or a cobra swaying with flute’s
gentle sound; innumerable types of fish and animals all over
are expressing themselves in a diversified manner!

We human beings are bestowed by nature with certain special
qualities and intellect compared to other creations on the earth;
so we have the special capabilities of expressing ourselves in
different creative forms through countless activities like
engineering, medicine, law, industries, scientific exploration,
writing, music, dance, painting, oration, ….. besides the routine
activities of eating, sleeping and procreation!

Quite a few of these activities are taken as a profession for our
regular livelihood and we try to create and express ourselves
every day by doing something new; otherwise beyond the professional
duty, we take up these as our passion or hobby and engage ourselves
in some creative pursuit, to express our inner feelings in
concrete forms for fulfillment, happiness and satisfaction;
so our life is all about self-expression!!

  3. Kamal’s line, “What is our life all about? ‘, reminded me of another short poem in the same vein by William Henry Davies.

    Leisure (What Is This Life If Full Of Care)

    What is this life if, full of care,
    We have no time to stand and stare.
    No time to stand beneath the boughs
    And stare as long as sheep or cows.
    No time to see, when woods we pass,
    Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
    No time to see, in broad daylight,
    Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
    No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
    And watch her feet, how they can dance.
    No time to wait, till her mouth can
    Enrich that smile her eyes began.
    A poor life this if, full of care,
    We have no time to stand and stare.
