My Parents Amitabha Chatterjee
My father was born and raised in Bikrampur, Dhaka. He joined the freedom movement when he was in college and was jailed by the British many times. In 1972, the Government of India awarded him a “Tamra Patra” for his participation in the Freedom movement. He was also honored as a Freedom fighter at a ceremony in Mahajati Sadan and his portrait was displayed there.
My mother was a high school graduate which was unusual for a girl in those days. She was a strong disciplinarian and instilled values of hard work to my three sisters and me. We came to Kolkata from Dhaka as a refugee practically penniless and she worked hard to keep the family together. She did not have a formal degree in education but taught high school students as a private tutor and was in high demand. She taught me that “If there is a will there is a way”.
